Local Government Reorganisation – the reorganisation of local Government in Surrey

Local government Reorganisation

Latest statement from MVDC (Stephen Cooksey) (17th April 2025): -

“I met with the ten other Surrey district and borough council leaders last week to discuss initial feedback received back from the government on the Interim Proposal for Local Government Reorganisation in Surrey, submitted in March. Mole Valley District Council has held back from backing either a three or two unitary proposal until more detailed information becomes available. At this most recent leader’s meeting, it was agreed that the preferred geography for the three-unitary proposal could be shared with residents and businesses. I would like to reiterate that no decisions have been made concerning whether this is the most appropriate way forward but, if it were to be progressed, it would see Mole Valley grouped with Epsom & Ewell, Reigate and Banstead and Tandridge in the East of Surrey. Work continues at pace ahead of the 9 May deadline when a final proposal for Surrey must be submitted. More details can be found by visiting www.surreylgrhub.org."

“Surrey residents and businesses are invited to express their views on the District and Borough's interim proposal in a survey via CommonPlace, issued by eight of Surrey’s eleven District and Borough Councils.

Have your say: the future of local services in Surrey

I would encourage you to review both the county council's and district and borough councils separate proposals, contained within the single  Interim Plan for Surrey if you are minded to complete this survey.

“The proposal available on the Commonplace survey page only presents one of the two proposals in part B of the interim Plan submitted in March, which is why we feel it would not be reflective of MVDC's stance at this time to put our name to it.

“We believe it is right that residents and businesses have an opportunity to view the broader proposals before commenting on the available options. I will continue to update you as the submission of the final proposal progresses.”
